![]() I just spent 100 bucks on some jank, but let's say you want a meta deck: a playset of goldspan dragon is 220 bucks, alrund's is another 100 and the land base and other cards is another 100-200. It's not inexpensive compared to ftp gaming though, which I think is where a lot of peoples "base line" is nowadays for a "cheap" hobby Inexpensive compared to 40k? Probably (though 40k never loses its resale value). ![]() *Oko standard as a short and notable exception ![]() But if you mark kaladesh as your mark in the sand, you're selling 3 years of actively great standard short for 1 year of actively too powerful standard and 2 years of dull standard. Standard had it's ups and downs afterword but leading up to eldraine rotation, and depending on your opinion post eldraine bannings we had interesting standards that we just got bored of. Guilds of Ravnica made the Mana incredibly better and introduced a very dynamic meta until Allegiance of Ravnica (including printing the cards for RDW to be a pillar of format again), which took time to solve until esper hero became best deck with esper control and rdw being worthy contenders. It's rotation broke the power of the format since it was overrepresented, leading to the dominaria standard noted above. Kaladesh standard had 3 interesting top tier decks with a few meaningful variations each. This very short time included the top tier deck being winconless UW control. Bad Mana, bad threats, and the format revolved around exactly 2 cards teferi5 and The Scarab God along with counters and kill spells. Standard hit an all time low* in Dominaria standard before guilds of Ravnica. I just prioritize getting a "set of 3" of all the important rare/mythic cards (goldspan, pack leader, magda, etc) so every time you get a random card from a daily reward, there's a decent chance you'll get one of your missing cards without having to spend a wildcard on it. There are common/uncommon alternatives for many competitive staples and you can get by without dual lands for a pretty long while - especially in a deck that plays green or blue since you'll be running some deck thinners or ramp to make up for missing cards. I only started playing 2-3 weeks ago (after a several year break) and easily made it into platinum tier while missing major parts of the decks. They aren't the perfected lists, but they don't need to be. Uh, I built gruul agro and izzet control on MTGA and I think I spent only $20. ![]() The wildcard system makes it so it costs more to buy a deck than it would in paper - especially because rare lands lead to having your wild cards be spent on mana. r/magicTCG is not produced, endorsed, supported by, or affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
